Omelas is a fictional Utopia where habitants engage in cultural festivals, have an abundant harvest, and live a life full of happiness and health. However, the existence of the society is dependant on the suffering and torture of a small child, who is confined to prison cell, starved, deprived of liberty, and left filthy. Without the suffering of this child, many believe Omelas would be destroyed. Therefore, the suffering of the child is required for the utopia to exist. Upon puberty, each habitant is exposed to the child. Though most people choose to continue existing in the society, a very small number of people choose to walk away from Omelas, into the unknown. You are the keeper, a guard who monitors the public's interaction with of the child and provide it a small amount of food every few days.
